What is Reiki?
Reiki is often translated to mean "Universal Life Energy", but can also mean enlightenment or the coming together of the Universal Spirit of Creation with our own. REI means "spirit" or "soul" and KI means energy. Reiki represents Universal Life Force Energy, an energy that can be used for healing body, mind, spirit and soul. It is an ancient hands-on healing method that accesses universal vital life force energy. When we are born, we receive vital life force energy from the universe. The amount of this energy available to us during our lives changes depending on our mental, physical and spiritual state. Joy, happiness, and playfulness increases our vital life force energy just as anger, depression and boredom depletes the energy.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki works by the simple laying of hands paired with intention for healing to occur. Reiki can also be done via distance work. The practitioner's own energy is not used at all, he or she simply allows Universal Life Force energy to flow through them to the client. This helps bring the client back to a state of harmony, and this state is most often where the healing occurs.
Okay, but seriously. How does Reiki work, exactly?
Reiki was described by Usui in his manual, "The Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai" as being "intuitive". It seems to go where needed, or flow in response to the demand or need of the recipient. It treats symptoms, as well as the root causes.*
So what exactly does Reiki heal?
Reiki is balance. It works on all levels; the physical, spiritual and emotional levels. Reiki energizes and heals the body. Research studies have shown that it speeds wound healing time, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and is effective as part of a regime for pain management. Anecdotal reports reveal that Reiki has cured serious illnesses. Reiki compliments other health care and medical treatments. Reiki speeds the healing process and can minimize the side effects of conventional medical treatments.*
What is Reiki NOT?
Reiki is not a religion. Neither is it a New Age practice. It has been used by practitioners of Christianity, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, and Islam, and is a spiritual practice that compliments any faith as a hands on healing practice.*
Principles of Reiki
"Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing."
~Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki Developer
What can I expect in a Reiki healing?
Since Reiki is an intuitive healing modality, it works differently for everyone, as every body is different. It is common for people who recieve a hands-on session to fall asleep or feel very relaxed. Depending on the person, sometimes Reiki can trigger an emotional release. This is completely normal and means the Reiki is working at a deep level. It is important to note that Reiki will not release anything the recipient is not ready to release. Should such a release occur, rest assured your dignity will be respected and you will given the space to fully experience this type of release. Overall, Reiki is a very pleasant, relaxing, soothing experience.
